Hippie Clothes and Accessories
The main motif of hippie clothes and accessories is the flower patterns and wild colors – anything that looks jarring and chaotic – hippies hated the conformity, of short haircuts, “proper” dresses, suits and ties. Colorful clothes with flower prints tend to be the standard in hippie clothing. Natural fibers are preferred over synthetic fabrics. Bell-bottom pants, large dresses, shirts and skirts were in high fashion during the hippie movement.
In fact, the hippies were adepts of comfortable clothes that will allow the body to move freely. Sometimes the hippies will choose nudity as a way of showing their attachment to nature. (But we wouldn’t suggest this as a hippie costume!)
Accessories for Your Hippie Clothes
Accessories followed the flower/nature motifs. Flower scarves tied on the heads, flower necklaces, bracelets, amulets and earrings in different colors, shapes and materials were part of the hippie outfit. Stones, natural fibers and gems were the main materials from which hippie accessories were made.
Precious metals, such as gold, silver and platinum did not rank among hippies’ preferences – this would have been a sign of status, wealth and “the establishment.” Long hair was one of the most precious accessories for both men and women belonging to the hippie movement.
If you are going to attend such a party in the near future, make sure you have the essential hippie gear: colorful, flower patterned shirts, bell-bottom pants, funny glasses, lots of accessories and some flowers in your hair. Last, but not least, make sure you have a positive, funny and nature-oriented attitude!
