Hippies, Hippies Everywhere!

Hippie CostumeThe hippie movement is probably one of the most influential waves of counter-culture born in United States. Their huge popularity (both in the United States and in the entire world) has turned the hippie movement into one of the most powerful anti-government, pacifist phenomenons of the 20th century.

Hippies emerged both to free themselves from the conformity of the 1950′s and also as a reaction to the violence displayed by the American government in the Vietnam War. Groups of youngsters, ranging between 15 and 25 years old, coming from middle class families, voiced their disapproval towards the violent policies of United States government and protested for peace, acceptance and a return to nature.

Yet, what it started as a movement seeking peace and harmony rapidly degraded into a vicious current involving sexual promiscuity and drug consumption. They finally burned out in the early to mid 1970′s, as the Vietnam War ended and much of the youth gradually “grew up” into careers, kids and mortgages. However, their philosophy has definitely remained with the liberal upbringing of their children and the green movement today.

Famous hippie statements & their meaning

Their famous sayings “make love not war”, “flower power” and “return to nature” fully represent their creed as well as their way of life. The first quote (“make love not war”) was a direct statement of their non-violent group profile as well as a statement of their rather liberal way of regarding sexual affairs (they militated for sexual freedom, including rights for bisexuals, transsexuals and homosexuals).

Peace Out Hippie Flower Child“Flower power” has also a double meaning: the first one is directed towards a peaceful living, harmony, equality and understanding between different peoples and races, while the second meaning (complementary to the first) is an appeal to return to the simple, natural way of living. This appeal to return to the nature is visible in their clothing styles, their eating habits as well as in their overall lifestyle.

Hippie lifestyle

Hippie lifestyle was considered outrageous by their contemporaries. Their preference for vegetarianism, their nomad way of life as well as their total negation of any social or political constraints was in deep conflict with American society. Yet, this did not stop their movement. Moreover, the scandal which aroused due to their exaggeratedly libertine way of life has acted as a marketing strategy, making the movement more and more attractive for youngsters looking for an identity.

Sexual permissiveness was not the only feature which made hippies the pariah of worldwide societies. The usage of high risk drugs (marijuana, hashish and LSD) caused severe psychological imbalances and mental problems, turning many hippies into outcasts.

Hippie music & cultural impact

The hippie movement has significantly influenced the ‘60s music. Famous musicians as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and John Lennon were part of the hippie movement. Their message for their fans was centered around the ideas of peace and love. The most eloquent example of hippie manifestation was the Woodstock Music and Art Festival held in 1969.

Other hippie cultural manifestations included body painting (not permanent, not to be confused with tattoos) and crafting (clothes and accessories were usually handmade.)

If you wish to dress as a Hippie this Halloween, think of free-flowing clothing (bell bottoms, loose shirts), wild colors like tie-dye and floral prints, and lots of fun accessories. Best of all, have a happy and positive attitude!
